Vashion Vips from the Vice Capt.

Introduction

Adding on to my irregularly regular Vise Vords column, I have now decided to launch a side column on my views of dressing up, fashion, styles and whatnots... I don't claim to be a Fashion Guru but am particularly fussy with the sort of clothes I wear. After all, it's the man that makes the clothes and you should always wear what suits your body.

Today I will be touching on...

PRINTS!

Now there are a variety of prints commonly seen on clothes... Just to name a few... Cammo prints... Floral prints... Checks... Animal skins... Polka Dots... Stars... Stripes... Amongst many others... And there's usually a season for them... Or a particular time whereby a certain print becomes "In Fashion"... Discard that, never believe trends.

Back on the topic of prints, I am rarely seen with more than one print on my body, as a matter of fact, I avoid wearing multiple prints on my body. What I mean by multiple prints is say for example, you are wearing a floral print baseball cap (These seem to be trending at the moment which I find very ugly), a checkered shirt and cammo pants... To top it off, you're wearing shiny shoes... That to me... Is a major disaster, unless you are a walking advertisement for Spotlight, in which case, you have now become an interactive visual for curtains and table cloths.

What you wanna do with prints is to show people your ability to pick out a particularly outstanding print right? Or your ability to pull off a look in a certain print... Therefore, always try to narrow the focal point of such a product. Say for example you've got this awesome leopard print jacket... Don't go choking up your style with bright pink shirts and fancy pants... Keep them basic in subtle colours (Earth colours, basics and the indigo colour way... Never fails) so your stunning leopard print jacket becomes the only thing a person can see. Remember, a person probably has only a 2 second time frame to check you out while walking on the streets before generally turning his or her attention to something else.

I'd love to go into greater detail on prints but well, they all come from my head... I don't exactly have a book on these nor do I compile and archive my thoughts. So here are some general tips in no particular order.

1. Check your skin colour.
2. When dealing with Polk Dots, avoid really REALLY huge ass cookie-like Polka Dots.
3. Avoid Cammo prints that have no class, like they came straight from a factory in Sri Lanka.
4. I do not like Hawaiian shirts, who came up with those.
5. Real classic tip - Horizontal stripes will make you look fat, vertical stripes will make you look tall. Play this to your advantage.
6. Repeated patterns of heart shapes and love motifs is not a print for clothing, they are better off as packaging designs for condoms and sex toys.
7. Tie-dye is quite awesome but very hard to pull off! Proceed with caution!
8. I don't know about Tribal motifs... It's not 1997 anymore...
9. The classic LV monogram never goes out of style.
10. Never be afraid to ask someone whom you feel has a superior sense of style for his or her opinion if a particular print looks good on you. Not asking here, is the real crime.

Conclusion

That's it for now. I'd love to continue... Maybe next time... On the subject of Jeans... Shoes... Perhaps you have a fashion-related question you might want to ask? I'd be glad to offer my opinion.

I don't think I'll be attaching pictures to these columns for I feel if you are unable to visualise what I am writing, then it is probably no use after all.

With ❤,

Vice Capt.

I visit the arcade every once in awhile - The state of Street Fighter we're in.

As Singapore's player base is small, a cheat's way of making it to the top is frantic memorizing of player's bad habits and play styles. Which in a way, you could look at it as, players being lazy and developing play styles and habits and not breaking them. In that sense, growth is hindered on both ends.

Yet randomizing your gameplay can often lead to what one would typically classify as "luan luan poh".

In conclusion, Street Fighter has become overly boring to engage in over the years.

Everybody tries to play all Japanese on the first credit... Solid footsies... Intricate Set Plays... Calculated jumping (... And gambles/risk vs reward) and mind-blowing mind-reading... Then after, everybody loses their minds.

SEMEN 2013 - Not So Lucky After All In Chinatown

Always have nothing but love for BlazBlue dogs.

Before I restart my kiss and tell blog entries about the FGC, let's fast forward a little to last weekend... It was South East Asia Major 2013.

Had no plans to show up until I was texted 3 months before the event by our very own Local Battles Gackt, to come support him... How could I say no... So well, the rest as you say is history, YD did ask me to help out on the mic and stuff and having not done any of this for so long, naturally I was worried, but agreed anyway.

This year there were so many international players to meet. Justin Wong, Mike Ross, Tokido, Kazunoko, Itabashi, Yubiken, GamerBee, the TW FGC, HumanBomb, Thailand FGC, Vietnam... Malaysia... Australia... My God I think I probably missed out a name or two but well yes, there were that many people... In the midst of running here and there, I do regret not having any time to speak with these people individually or even take pictures...

But well, it's not the first time running tournaments for me... Although I did not actually RAN this Major.. Just helping out with brackets and covering as emcee and stream commentator took a huge chunk out of me.

I really need to give shoutouts to Elfin, Paul and people like Sharkface... Curren... Who have been running these brackets for the longest time. Now I, have never done such work, I've only asked what comes next, I don't actually officiate matches... So when I was thrown a 8 man? 12 man? I forgot how many people were in a bracket but it was a relatively small bracket... I was like a fish outta water.

I cannot imagine how Elfin and gang ran that 67 man bracket on paper at BMS 2010. Mad props to them...

Played a game with Karipaku from Yubiken. Probably, the best female player in the world right now. Please vector in the character she plays and the sort of understanding and intelligence that has to come from playing such a character.

Day 1 afterwards had a good beer with Yubiken, Itazan and Kazunoko... Then we headed back to TC where I played a couple of games against Kichijojiken. He's an awesome dood that guy is... And his tech with Ken is insane. All that front throw/back throw setups and how he just instinctively catches my button pressing like it was 2009 all over again, I was so overwhelmed.

Day 2 ended at Razer HQ, the after party, 5v5 and Money Matches. Listen kids, never run a tournament when you have to make announcements for teams and such without a microphone. Busted my throat, it got infected, and winded up in bed with a up and down fever.

The Vice Capt. here with Yubiken's Super Santarouman and Kichijojiken at the Razer HQ for the after party.

Best moment of that night? I love it. Super Santarouman vs Tommy, money match, biggest pot in the history of pots. $600 on the line, mind you this is Singapore, we do not play $600 money matches EVER. The side bets and stacks were off the charts with lots of the locals taking out that cash for Tommy because they knew he was very comfortable with the Sagat matchup. The Taiwanese all took out 'em big bucks for San Tai... I remember Ren just giving me his $100 bill... I couldn't take it... It was mad, mad fun.

Who the fuck does reaction punish Tiger Destruction against a Kikoken. TWICE. Who looks out for these kind of things? - Yubiken Super Santarouman does. And that is why he is the best.

TXL, BLP and All Other Acronyms Associated With The FGC / Memoirs of a Vice Capt. - TWO

I'll write you chapter 2 now, titled...

GameAxis Page 6

Rolling WIth It

Alright so picking up where I left off, no bullshit, my first taste of true corporate community work came in the form of promoting this little unknown game called Mini Fighter, I bet even you have never heard of it.

What's in it for this one... Community building, growing, promoting the game on our forums, organizing a tournament, creating buzz... You know... The usual here and there. Like always, we all had big plans, or at least, I had big plans, big ways to go about this, halted by, what would go on to later become the biggest bane in all of my pursuit for glory, the lack of direct funding.

ANYWAY...

I didn't have much to do or say in this... It was pretty much all up to TL, I just came a long for the ride... I don't remember doing much here. Well maybe, I design those Staff Tags, yeah that's about all. The next one was fun though...

What manner of magic is this? Uniforms?

We did this in-store event for Samsung at Vivo. It was the best crossover promotion (At that point of time at least), are you ready? Samsung TVs x Street Fighter 4. What better way to show off Samsung's Hi-Def TVs with the newly rendered SF4 Graphics!? Brilliant init? Who came up with this? Not me... Probably TL... He's the one in touch with Rapture.

By now I had somewhat sunk deep into this whole Events crap and really lovin' it. This was a fun event too you know, one of those beautiful moments with everybody in the same room, no bullshit, nothing of the present day, just good ol' get together playing Street Fighter.

The tournament was plagued by bad lag, but the community put on a great show. Whose idea was it? Now I can't remember was it mine... But we somehow came to the agreement that we should use a Female and Male Emcee Duo so as to project the image of the game and community being open to both Male and Female competitors. We wanted to rid that social stigma of Gaming being a male-dominated territory (Which it actually is, all these years gone by...)

Anyway...

Yeah I have many good memories from this one. This was probably  the first time we actually had high quality recordings at a tournament. I think this was also one of the first tournaments that were rigged.

One of my Staffers, who would go on to become one of my MOST loyal and responsible Staffers, Mr. Mustapusta himself, showed up in Bermudas and Slippers for a PAID job, and guess who took a load of shit from the Bosses... ME! I got 1x earful and I could only managed a,

"Ok, ok, I'm sorry. I'll fix it."

So Musta, this goes out to you.

But it was great la I mean... Just look at the photo, it don't lie one bit. Don't believe, go look at all your recent photos.

This picture is epic in many ways. I mean c'mon... SY with hair? I had no idea Jasper was at this event as well! And what is with that Leslie hair?
Wait... Is that Altheiumaster?

TXL, BLP and All Other Acronyms Associated With The FGC / Memoirs of a Vice Capt. - ONE

Foreword

I've been meaning to write this story down about my life in the FGC afraid that one day I might forget all about it because after all they did contain some truly magical, bitterly frustrating and sometimes outright stupid moments that have become a part of my memories one way or another. I finally moved a joint to write this down after looking at old pictures on Round1.sg's Facebook page. Ha. And I'm not going to put this down in chronological order so you're gonna get this however fresh it comes to mind, straight up, just the way it has always been, telling it like it is.

Disclaimer: Before you proceed any further, I want every single one of you to know that this is in no way "HATE", nor is it "SPITEFUL", this is not a personal attack on any one body, I'm done with that it's all in the past, I don't bear grudges and as I'm telling these stories I want to share with you the emotions I felt so as to be as honest as I can be. If this is not going to sit well with you, then I suggest you read no further then this paragraph.

So here it is. Chapter 1. I'll call this...

The accidental symmetry of black comedy found in this
picture anon is sincerely romantic.

Jonda Has Arrived

Now I'm sure I've been quoted on this many a times but I'll go out to say it once more, that I started out just like you, my friend, yes, standing in the back, quiet as a bat, watching these bar-like tournaments going on in that lowly TKA Arcade down at Bugis. They were always so crowded. Always filled with so much energy. It didn't occur to me in the beginning, to want to be a Emcee, or a Commentator, or a TO... For me honestly? I just wanted to be part of this circle of seemingly wonderful people. I thought to myself,

"Boy this does look fun."

Bah we save all that integration BS for another chapter. Now we fast forward to early 2010. By now, I had somewhat become familiar with the entity that is known as Round1.sg, the community folks, some of which had by now become my friends. It was the start of the work year for Round1.sg, many big things were about to happen. So here I was in that lowly TKA Arcade again, when all of a sudden, a wild Real Deal, rang me on the phone, and asked me to come up to MOS Burger.

I got up, I saw a bunch of people, the committee that is, and they made it very fast for me, Real Deal at least, made it very fast for me. He asked me if I wanted to be part of Round1.sg, and without a seconds hesitation, I said,

"Yes."

The first task I was given in that work year, was Round1.sg's first anniversary tournament. Yes my friend, when I joined the team, Round1.sg was 1 year old. I wasn't just going to make it a tournament like those bi-weekly tournaments before it. C'mon, it's a birthday, it's gotta be special innit. I wrecked my brains hard brother, I kept thinking of things that we could do that would be different. I sat up in my bed for nights, I'm not lying about this part, I literally stayed in bed sleepless. And then it hit me.

I don't know what exactly, or when exactly, but it just did. For starters man, the poster for that event was great. I could have done a better job with the layout and Typography, but I was barely even't a professional Designer then. But Jen contributed some awesome illustrations for that poster that we plastered all over TKA, all over Singapore. I had this idea to give out awards to players based on crowd votes y'know, not just pot prizes for the top 3, I had the idea that more people should stand a chance to win something, for showing up, for showing their support, I wanted everyone to have fun, was what was going through my mind. So I made up this list of silly awards like MVP, Most Ballsy Player Award, Most Xialan Player etc... I made 5 of these categories and got everyone excited on Forums, promising them prizes if they won a certain category.

Now honest to God, again, I'm not lying, I wished I had money, because it was my intention in the first place, to get some real awesome prizes. Most of you don't know this man, but the team went out weeks before the event approaching game shops, famous game shops from Funan to Far East, to seek their support in contributing ANYTHING, ANYTHING, as prizes for you folks, we reached out to so many, but at the end of the date, none of these game shops replied, none of them supported. What else was a poor boy to do? Dood, I got you guys gifts from Daiso. $10 man, from my own pocket.

I gave some really wacky prizes that I can't quite remember now... But I remember I gave the MVP a Nail Clipper, because he was the MVP, so he had to take care of his fingers, and nails. Ha.

-

(I'll end it here and continue the later half of this story on another day, more bacon eggs and cheese to come!)

Vise Vords from the Vice Capt. - Twentieth Century Boy

That night, I got back on stream since... What match was it I last did... I think something from the A League... Well, I got back on it and it felt sort of bits and pieces. Still, I dropped the link on my TXL's FB Page and am grateful for the friends and fans who turned up on stream chat with those little words, it meant much to me. I'm also grateful for what little NEW viewers who decided to "Follow" me on Twitter, I am grateful I am at least still somewhat entertaining ha ha.

Well I got on stream to commentate on my good friend Gackt's matches, a First to 10 against 2 of Malaysia's best in Itabachow Zangief and Keane Hi. Itabachow of course famously beat HumanBomb from Hong Kong in a previous First to 10 and wanted to pit his skills against Gackt.

That's the basic summary of it.

For anybody who caught that stream, after that really long technical shits with the connection, (Well that was the fun part actually, we talked a lot about Superhero movies and Manga and you know the usual stuff I like to talk about.) I'll put it out right here right now, I was honestly up for it I swear to God. Like every other show I've done, I came in there with a 100% attitude to deliver and I apologise if midway the things I said became lacklustered and completely bias... I'm not apologising for what I said, I'm apologising if you felt that way, perhaps it was unprofessional of me and I do not mean any harm to Itabachow or any of the good folks from the Malaysian FGC.

As a matter of fact, I have nothing but admiration for their undying devotion to keeping their scene strong.

At the end of it, I promised to be at SEA Major. Yes, I said I would be there, to liven things up and shit you know doing what a Jonda does best. And while it may seem like it's not on my mind or I really couldn't give a jack about it, it comes to me every once in awhile, I do think about doing a bad show from being out of touch for so long, yes it makes me nervous to a certain extend. I hope it goes well. Your cheers on stream are most welcome and is what drives me forward when I'm on the mic all of the time, every tiny voice.

With ♥,

Vice Capt.

Once, I was a young angry teenager. With a online diary of a previous URL, a random creature stumbled on it from a chance argument with another, she left me comments, and we exchanged comments, and we exchanged mails, and they were great mails at lengths. We talked about everything you could possibly imagined, everything that could interest her, interest me interest her. We shared music, she got me on to "The Rip" and "Uniform", I got her on to well... The music I got her, probably didn't make such a big impact on her life as it did to mine. The daily anticipation for new mail, the cultural exchange, the emotional connection, here I had met, from the comfort of my chair, a mirror match in the form of the opposite sex. I never had thought, as corny as it sounds, that creatures like that were created, we were pen pals. It was a beautiful memory. Let's celebrate joyous occasions, life.

Indigo Broccoli

I vaguely recall,

Attending a company chalet in my Part-Time Warrior days, a boy 18 years of age, I had attended, knowing history could be repeated but magic could not, but rather taking my chances on seeing someone I had only gotten to know, but wanted so much to see, so I came and I stayed.

As the memories start pouring in, so does saturation, and I find myself misplacing events, or rather, stacking them, amongst one another, so much so that I confuse this and that with this and that... I can barely remember... I feel like I'm about to tell you a different story from the one I had intended.

Nevertheless, it was about taking my chances and showing up just to see someone I had only gotten to know. Moving along those lines, she would later go on to tell me that for reasons that were unknown to her then, she was indeed very happy when I bursted through the door. (That reason would be very easy to spell, but too difficult to admit to... later on...)

Again, we drift, but I found myself caught between fronting and being real. Somehow that mode of action got me so tired, I ended up spending the night on the community sofa, falling asleep.

What they didn't know was, my eyes were closed and I looked very much asleep, but the Lord knows my brain was loud and clear.

Someone had came and covered me with a blanket. I thought it was her, I had hoped it was her, but fearing disappointment, I kept my eyes shut. Just then she spoke, it was someone else's voice. The voice of her good friend, she said, in Mandarin, now I can't remember the exact words... But they sounded like,

"You should stop dreaming."

It was directed at the girl, with the blanket. I kept it as that and fell asleep for real this time.

The next day, I texted her, the one I had came to see, and asked about the blanket and if she knew who put it over me. She said she didn't know and I didn't ask further but somehow... Maybe a few days or weeks later... I got to know the identity of the assailant, which fuck me, I can't even remember what her name was now... But yes, ok I found out who and I never did got to thanked her for it nor even asked her about it... Did she teased me about it? I can't quite remember but I'm pretty sure the both of us acted as if nothing happened.

It's one of those TV scenarios you never thought existed in life itself.

Had we been given a chance to rewrite that... Had I known her true feelings or whatever it was that compelled her to do it (Oh I suddenly remember now... She went on to study Law at a University... The last thing I was told...) or whatever it was of a message she was trying to send me... Had I known all of that, I would have run so fast out the door without confronting it and broke her heart so symmetrically it would have been uneven.

And that's just the reality of it. You only push what is harmful into your body, in that sense, love and cigarettes are the same thing.

2012 - The Year In Question, The Year In Review

Merry Christmas, Teamchemist

2012 wasn't that bad, yes it was all bad.

Apart from life carrying on, working, playing, buying, working out, working... That's how it went by pretty much really.

I took up Japanese classes, that's fun somewhat and gave the weekends a greater meaning.

I retired from competition in March after a disappointing performance at the Shadaloo Showdown Qualifier and gave up on Ibuki completely, became this lost sheep wandering around the character select screen pretending to be a really good Cammy player.

Resigned to my fate as a washed-up has-been and joined VintageSoul on commentary for the better part, aka "JondaSoul TV".

But then I found it again, somehow, after realizing the ridiculous direction this game was headed, picked a new character to re-learn the game, that got me thinking about Street Fighter, a little like it was back in 2010.

看手最厉害lor, Daigo

Still game related, playing against Daigo was quite a big deal to me. Much to respect about The Beast.

Doesn't matter.

In the queue for Perfume

If I was asked what the greatest moment of 2012 was, I'd probably named Perfume live in Singapore... or AFA, I really enjoyed myself at AFA, in a very honest way... In fact, on those 2 occasions, I really enjoyed myself in a very honest way.

Watching Death Cab For Cutie again was great too, I love that band. Benjamin Gibbard is a genius.

With beer on the table, everybody becomes a brother

Yeah how could I forget. There were 2 very important events in 2012. Planning and executing together a very good friend's proposal surprise to his girlfriend of 10 years and watching yet another dear friend from secondary school getting married to her boyfriend she met in Poly days. Love is such a beautiful thing as I sat there on both occasions recounting glory days. I am happy for all of them.

Vice Capt.

Xialan of the Peace

Short update. Had a meeting with Vx to discuss Team Xialan's major plans for the calendar year ahead and we came to the conclusion that we want to break away from Gaming commentary/emceeing or Cooking Shows which has become somewhat of a comfort zone for us and want to venture into marriages and wedding, namely, becoming Justice of Peace(s) and wed people on a daily basis. Apparently, you need to be appointed by the President so if anybody has a way to contact him, his Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr or something, please forward it to us and we will contact him ourselves. Thanks in advance and have a great year ahead.

Sincerely,
Vice Capt.
